Kerry was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. Her father was enlisted in the
U.S. Air Force, so the family moved about every two years. When Kerry was
10 years old, her family was stationed in Colorado Springs. An airplane accident
forced Kerry's dad to be medically discharged (retired) from the Air Force
and her family stayed in Colorado Springs. Upon her dad's medical retirement she was
ecstatic to think she could go to the same high school with the same
friends from junior high.
Kerry graduated from Air Academy High School and moved to Boulder, Colorado to
attend the University of Colorado studying Public Relations.
Kerry graduated with honors from CU in 1985. One month later she married David Krycho, whom she had
known throughout junior and senior high, and moved back to Colorado Springs.
David and Kerry were acquaintance-type friends throughout high school and stayed in touch through
college via mutual friends. Mid-way through Kerry's
junior year of college, while home one weekend, she called David to see if
he wanted get a cup of coffee. One cup of coffee led to another and a year
and half later they were married. She jokingly tells her kids to beware of getting a cup of coffee,
because you never know where it may lead!
After much moving as a child, Kerry loved the fact that she could again settle in a familiar place.
Colorado Springs will always be home to her.
Kerry's first job after college was working as a Public Relations assistant for a medical center.
She was laid off after a short time due to budget cuts. She returned to
banking, a job she had held while a college student, and continued to work
until shortly before she had her first child, a son, in 1987.
Kerry had always wanted to be a mom and dove in whole-heartedly. A little less than two years later in
early 1989, she had the couple's first daughter. And then in 1991, she had
her youngest child, another daughter. Money was tight for the family due
to David getting laid off from the construction industry and starting
college, so Kerry sought for ways to add to the family income while
remaining at home. Through a family connection, Kerry began to do
freelance proofreading of legal texts for John Wiley. While the work was
exceedingly dry and very sporadic, it still added to the family income.
As the children grew to school age, Kerry and David explored the different educational options and
decided to home school their children. Kerry loved teaching her children
and instilling in them the wonder and love of learning, which they all
retain to this day. All three children were accelerated, which made for
some difficult transitions when they later started attending public schools in their middle school years.
Throughout this time, Kerry continued freelance proofreading for several clients including John Wiley,
Graphics West, Waterbrook Press, and Cook Communications Ministries.
In 2003, Kerry pursued a full time position as an assistant editor in the curriculum department at Cook
Communications where she worked for two years. At the end of 2005, Kerry
felt the Lord calling her to be more available to her children as they
prepared for high school and beyond. At this point her son was getting
ready to graduate high school and preparing for college. While they didn't
need her physically present to baby-sit them, they did need her input and
availability as a sounding board during the transitions they were all
facing. So Kerry began her own freelance business editing and proofreading
for Cook Communications, Barbour Publishing, and individual authors.
Kerry has always dreamt of writing and is now pursuing that dream. She has written poems, articles,
and essays, and published online Sunday school lessons for middle school
students for Cook Communications. She is currently working on several
articles and a book about our courageous military families.
